MEME: Saturday Six - Episode 166

Patrick opines, "It’s time to lighten up! The topic this week is stress, so take a deep breath before answering these questions. That is, if you want to...the last thing I want to do is stress you out about getting relaxed!

But before the questions, Jude of "My Way" was first to play last week. Congratulations!

Here are this week's "Saturday Six" questions. Either answer the questions in a comment here, or put the answers in an entry on your journal...but either way, leave a link to your journal so that everyone else can visit! To be counted as "first to play," you must be the first player to either answer the questions in a comment or to provide a complete link to the specific entry in your journal in which you answer the questions. A link to your journal in general cannot count. Enjoy!"

1. Have you ever talked to your doctor about stress levels in your life?
Yes, but not recently.
2. How likely are you to “let go” of something that stresses you out?
These days, quite likely. Not so in the past – part of what got me to where I'm at today.
3. Does your family or your work cause the most stress in your life? Do you think your family members or co-workers realize how much stress they generate?
Nowadays, it's the result of inner stress – just me, myself and I to blame. Back when the work was the stressor, I'm sure some knew, none cared.
4. Take the quiz: Will You Live to 100?
Without taking the quiz, no bloody way!

OK, I'll take the freaking quiz.

Chance You'll Live to 100: 34%

Okay, so living until you're 100 is a long shot...
But who knows how good medicine will get in the future. Take a little better care of your body, and you'll might actually see the triple digits.

Will You Live to 100?

5. When you think that you are at the breaking point, are you more likely to have an angry blow-up, a self-contained meltdown, or something in between? When was the last time you had such a moment?
I will blow up these days, instead of keeping it all bottled up. Harder on those around me, much healthier for my heart and head.
6. When you’re stressed out, what is the first clue someone who knows you well is likely to pick up on?

I go into "Rabbit Hunting Mode" -- I become "vewy, vewy quiet!"

How To Say Bangor

Here's a cute little video I stumbled upon while searching for something else on YouTube on how to say the name of my town...

John M. Scalzi's Weekend Assignment #170 -- Kitchen Tips

Weekend Assignment #170: Share a useful tip for the kitchen. It can be about anything from cooking to cleaning, as long as it involves something in the kitchen (which, for the purposes of this assignment, includes the pantry and the table you eat at).

Extra credit: You're ten and allowed to cook a meal. What do you cook?

Dear John,

Weather here has been off and on this week. High of 89° and muggy with thunderstorms one day and a low of 36° after a startlingly clear night that was just made for lying out on a hillside in a snug sleeping bag counting stars. Except for the visitor...

We've got a bear in the neighborhood. Two nights in a row. Tuesday night / Wednesday morning I was aroused from my trance in front of the boob tube by an awful clatter and the sound of tires squealing. Took off running to check it out, flipped on the big outside floods (1.2KW) and opened the door to hear thrashing and crashing as something made it's way across the blackberry patch crushing canes as it went. There was a car stopped out on the road beyond the trees. But, without a sidearm, I wasn't going out there in the dark. Slowly, the car made its way down the hill and stopped at the edge of the drive. The window rolled down and someone said something that sounded like “trash bag, road, Bear.” From such cryptic words I was able to deduce that said bruin, most likely a recently evicted yearling, was attempting to haul a trash bag down the road when said car crested the hill at umpity-ump miles per hour, as is the wont of late night denizens behind the wheel in these parts, only to discover a largish brown-black mass waving a black plastic bag around, mindless of its appointment with a cold metal death only nanoseconds away. Not sure who was scared more. Driver yielded, bear fled, trash bag left in the road (which is why it is illegal to put trash out the night before, by the way).

Anyway, my kitchen tip is about preparing bear steaks. They tend to be, well, gamy. And tough. Particularly if the hunter isn't skilled at field dressing, skinning or how he transports the carcass. Or how long and under what conditions he hangs the meat. Bear fat is similar in texture to human fat and turns rancid just as fast, despite refrigeration (or freezing!) so all steaks must be trimmed of as much fat as possible. Then there's the whole issue of wild omnivores and parasites. Again, like humans and pigs, trichinosis and other diseases are a possibility, due to encysted parasites.

So here is a quick way to deal with the whole plethora of issues – get yourself a 2 liter of Mountain Dew (the heavy duty, full of sugar and caffeine variety, not “diet”), say a little prayer to the Ursus Gods and smother those steaks in onions and Mountain Dew – completely cover the meat with the soda. Cover on the counter for at least an hour, two is preferable (oh, refrigerate if you must, weakling, but two hours is the maximum marinade time as there will be no further improvement in flavor beyond that point) and then remove each slab and rinse off the Dew and any cysts that have disgorged their wormy contents off the steaks, dry, rub down with a half a clove of garlic on both sides and then coat with black pepper and Spanish paprika. Heat some olive oil in a pan over medium high heat (if using open flame, rub the oil on the steaks with the pepper and paprika). Brown both sides, about 2 minutes a side. Pour in a cup of Guinness stout and partially cover, allowing the liquid to braise the meat until tender, about ten minutes. The liquid should be reduced by at least half. Remove the steaks to a platter and cover. We want them to finish cooking from internal heat. All bear meat must be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Add a mix of butter and flour sufficient to take up the braising liquid and make a gravy. Serve with baked potatoes and fresh, steamed broccoli spears and even the distaff side of the family will have no complaints. The Mountain Dew has not only fulminated all encysted critters from the tissue, it's a great marinade, producing a sweet tang in the meat that plays off the Guinness gravy as if made solely for that purpose (when we all know it was invented to keep coders awake for 36 hours at a stretch). Bon appetit!

By the way, I learned all of that from my mother and father when I was a mere slip of a boy. I might have been ten. They used Rolling Rock lager, as that what was on hand (my mother used it instead of “Calgon, Take Me Away” when bathing, She liked the first few icy cold sips. The rest she used as a hair treatment, like a cream rinse without the cream...). I prefer the Guinness as it has more body and flavor.

My favorite dish to prepare at the age of ten was open-faced bacon, tomato and cheese sandwiches, prepared under the broiler. Quick, easy and satisfying. Yum!

Glad to hear you all survived the Zombification of America the other day. Give my best to Krissy and Athena. Take care of yourself, too. You're looking a little green around the gills. Oh, I see. It's just the Creation Museum thing that has you dyspeptic.

Bwahahahaha!

wil

P.S. The Mountain Dew works to marinade any kind of red meat. Thicken with garlic, chiles, and molasses and you have Dew Jerk Sauce for the BBQ. It's the concentrated OJ that does it. And it really does force the rapid evacuation of parasites from meat... tell Athena it's fun to watch them come up out of the meat. Look for little streams of bubbles, much like looking for clams at the beach...

Janet looked up from the viewfinder of her camera to remark, “This week, I have a theme...bloggers! These fill-ins are all about bloggers I read, so I'll include links in the extended entry. In the meantime, feel free to fill in the blanks with whatever comes to mind, about whoever comes to mind!”

1. She loves _coffee_, the darker the better!
2. He loves all types of _chocolate_.
3. This blogger misses _Pam Hilger (his1desire) of Just One Girl's Head Noise_.
4. Unfortunately, she's _mouldering in her grave_ lately!
5. _Calamari_ is not her strong suit; in fact I do believe _she finds all fish to be_ ho hum.
6. Her _perfume_ fascinates me; I love that _it_ smells (and tastes) of _vanilla_!
7. What are you doing this weekend? Tonight I'm looking forward to _a movie_, tomorrow my plans include _working at camp_ and Sunday, I want to _watch the race_!

Happy Flag Day

It almost slipped by me. Today is Flag Day in the USA. Click the flag draped coffin to hear a 1918 version of this George M. Cohan hit.

You're A Grand Old Flag

You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev'ry heart beats true
'neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

MEME: Wednesday Mind Hump – KK, OK!

RFDuck took a moment from his busy schedule to say, “Greetings, humpers! Today is Kitchen Klutzes Of America Day. That means we'll be talking about all the things that can go wrong in the good ol' kitchen.”

1. Have you ever cut or burned yourself while cooking?
Oh yeah, and I have the minor scars to prove it. Worst one occurred while slicing a tomato with a new knife while camping in the Tetons. Sliced myself to the bone on the side of the first joint of my left thumb. Staunching the blood with a pressure bandage was only partially working. I ended up driving the 25 miles to the Jackson Hole hospital with my hand out the window, dripping the blood. Took three stitches ... and three quarters at the car wash to get everything cleaned up!
2. Have you ever put in a wrong ingredient in a dish (sugar instead of salt, for example)?
Yes. Usually salvageable but not always. These days mostly a case of too much of something as I taste things like white crystalline substances before pouring them in.
3. Have you ever dropped, or otherwise ruined, a dish just before serving it? Bonus points if you had a large number of people waiting to eat it.
Just last week, in fact. Had a lovely tuna salad on a bed of lettuce for lunch slip right out of my hand and onto the floor. The dog and cats were ecstatic...
4. In case you aren't a cook - Have you ever had a restaurant make a klutzy move that affected your meal? Tell us about it!
I once had a bit of a fumbling problem. It was a Saturday night, things were hopping and I seem to have lost all motor coordination. I plated this 16 ounce Sirloin along with the steamed whole Maine lobster and swung around with it to put the platter under the heat lamps. My bosses were walking by the counter at the time. He received the steak on the front of his starched tux shirt; she got the lobster in her cleavage and the melted butter in her hair. I got fired. The customer had to wait for the owner to change out of his tux so he could take over my station. I still laugh about it whenever I see a short, busty woman with a long dress and décolletage...

LiveLeak.com - Rare 1 in 50 million 2-toned lobster caught off the coast of Newport

LiveLeak.com - Rare 1 in 50 million 2-toned lobster caught off the coast of Newport: "Rare 1 in 50 million 2-toned lobster caught off the coast of Newport

Lobsterman Jim Mataronas IV woke up Monday morning hoping for a lucky day on the water, but all the luck materialized in a single lobster. Jim described the day's catch off Newport, R.I., as average, save for one lobster so unique the chances of his catching it were one in 50 million.

'I pulled it out and thought someone was playing a joke on us. It looked like someone took a ruler right down it,' the Little Compton resident said. 'It looks half-cooked.' Mataronas, the son of veteran lobster trapper Jim Mataronas III of the family-owned Sakonnet Lobster Co., said the closest thing he had seen to something this rare was the popular blue lobster, a less-rare occurance but still nothing to take lightly. The chances of catching a blue lobster are still one in two million."

MEME: Monday Music Mambo -- Desert Island Edition

RFDuck, intrepid musical mememeister, shook his groggy head and was heard to mutter on his way to bed, "Welcome to another mambo! Today is King Kamehameha Day, and I don't know a thing about Hawaiian music! I suppose we could tweak the theme a bit and talk about tropical-sounding music."

1. What is your favorite reggae or ska song?
I really haven't got one. Reggae isn't a genre I listen to unless it happens to come on the radio when I am listening to WERU or Radio Paradise. Otherwise, I never listen to it. I haven't a clue as to what “ska” is. Although, I do get a kick out of Vegemite Reggae's version of Stairway To Heaven off their album Stairways To Heaven / Stairways To Hell.
2. What music puts you in the mood for a tropical getaway vacation?
Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville does it every time.
3. If you were on a cruise, what musicians would you want to be the entertainment onboard?
Lyle Lovett and his Big Band, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett, Billy Joel and Leonard Cohen. Not asking for too much, am I? I'd want to dance and when I'm tired of dancing, I want to listen to an intelligent singer-songwriter.
4. You're stuck on a deserted tropical island. Assuming you have a way to play music, what five albums do you want to have with you? MP3 players do NOT count!
Let's see. First, something easy on the ears. Chopin, I think, his Etudes, or maybe Mozart's Requiem, Ludwig Von Beethovan's Ode to Joy or perhaps his sixth symphony. One or two of those. The Pentangle eponymous double disk album. It's A Beautiful Day would be one and the Beatles remix/reissue Love would be another. There, I think that's make five albums (LP's at that) from my collection of vinyl.

I'm looking forward to hear about your choices. Just swing by the link in this entry's title and snag a clean copy of the questions and go to town!

MEME: Monday Madness - Car Craziness

Taking another sip of her cafe au lait, Mistress Otto took a moment to exclaim, “Good Morning! Here are this week's questions. Have fun and have a great week!” =)

1. Do you listen to the radio, or a CD, when you're driving in your car/truck/SUV? Both, actually. Not at the same time, of course. Depending on the vehicle, we even listen to cassette tapes.
2. Do you have one of those GPS systems in your vehicle? We have a handheld unit that we can take with us.
3. About how many miles do you put on your vehicle in a month? About 1500.
4. Do you have your oil changed regularly? Not nearly as often as I should. Now that you can't treat your dirt in the driveway with the oil, disposal is a problem.
5. Do you take your vehicle to a car wash or do you wash it at home? Car Wash, baby!
6. How often do you have the inside of your vehicle cleaned? Do you do it yourself or do you pay someone to do it? Not very often and then I do it. Reluctantly.
7. What is the color of your vehicle?
One is Midnight Blue, another is Champagne and then the other is Silver.

MEME: Sunday Seven - Episode 93

Patrick stuffed another Tums in his gullet and said, “I spent the weekend with my parents and we ended up going to a Chinese restaurant for dinner today. I actually behaved myself as far as the diet was concerned, and tried to eat as many vegetables as I could instead of fried meats. (There were still some fried foods, of course: I’m not that strong, you know!) But that got me thinking about this week’s question.”

“But first, Otowi of "Otowi" was first to play last week’s questions about fears. Congratulations!”

“On to this week's question!”

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:

MEME: Saturday Six - Episode 165

It’s official: summer hasn’t started, yet, and I’m already ready for fall and the accompanying cooler temperatures. It’s 96º outside, so I’m happy to be indoors with air conditioning to ask another set of questions.

But first, a quick tip of the hat to Jaibhagwan of "Life is a Force of Nature," who was first to play last week.

Enjoy!

1. What do you consider more important to your long-term happiness: your relationships, your location, your career or your dreams? Actually, none of the above. I consider my health most important, coupled with continued viability of mind. All else springs from that. Truly.

2. Other than a significant other, how many people do you feel you can truly turn to for advice?
None.
3. Of the people you think know you best, how surprised would you think they would be if they knew “everything” there is to know about you?
Very.
4. Take the quiz: Are you living the wrong life?
Stupid quiz alert.

Your Life is 30% Off Track

In general, your life is going very well. You're quite happy with where you are and what you're doing. And even if you get a bit off course, you're usually able to get back on track easily.

Are You Living The Wrong Life?

5. What is the longest you’ve stayed in a job you weren’t happy in?
Four years.
6. What single factor made you stay the most?
Inertia.

Friday Fill-in, #24

fridayfillin.gif

Janet took a moment from her very busy life contemplating her toe nails to say, “Since it's my birthday month June, and I'm heading to Vegas in a couple weeks, we're going to have another theme--what happens in Vegas STAYS in Vegas. Bear that in mind while filling in the blanks this week, and if YOU'RE not going to Vegas...well, pretend you are!”

1. The first thing I'll do when I get to Vegas will involve _a single malt scotch, a cigar and a deck of cards_.
2. The LAST thing I'll do when I leave Vegas will be _to check that I haven't got toilet paper stuck to my heel_.
3. _Being with my wife_ is the thing I'm most looking forward to in Vegas. (Saying anything else would just land me in hot water).
4. Although it will be hot in June in Vegas _the action along the strip_will be even hotter!
5. The reason I chose Vegas was/is _relative anonymity_.
6. _LL Bean's_ just sent me a check!
7. Finally some time off from work! Tonight I'm looking forward to _hurried packing and driving to the airport_, tomorrow my plans include a massage and a bit of sun by the pool and Sunday, I want to _make a bunch of money at the roulette table_!

Have a great weekend!

If you'd like to play along, give Janet a visit at Fond of Snape for a clean copy of the questions and to leave a link to your answers in the comments there. You'll be so glad you did that you'll bite your big toe nail to the quick!

My Latest Musical Influence: Skilda

This band, Skilda has got my motor running and my heart a-racing. It's a Power-Celt Rock group with a bit of a Techno past. Definitely not your run of the mill export from Ireland. This video of their tune FREEDOM, FUTURE is a montage of a performance in Mallaig, Scotland.

Here, now, is Skilda:

Wednesday Mind Hump – MAG-nificent!

Rfduck took a minute to focus beyond the edge of his beak to squawk, “Hello everyone! Welcome to another Hump. I just finished reading from a magazine, so today's meme will be about magazines.”

1. Do you currently subscribe to any magazines? If so, which ones?
Yes, I take two and She Who Must Be Obeyed takes two. In my case, they're recreation-specific. Sea-Kayaking and Model Railroading. My wife likes the Lighthouse Digest and Downeast.
2. What magazines have you subscribed to in the past?
How far back? Time, Life, Look, Boy's Life,Road & Track, Motortrend, Off-Lead, Dog World, German Shepherd Quarterly, Cruising World, Pickup, Van & Four-Wheel Drive, Computer Shopper, PC Magazine, Windows Magazine, SysAdmin, BOCA, more codes and zoning crap than I care to recall, etc...
3. What do you do with the little cards that always fall out of the magazine? Do you toss them, or have you found a use for them?
Toss them, often before reading the magazine or they end up all over the floor.
4. If you could start a magazine, what would it be about? Who or what would be on the cover of the first issue?

A bad business to be in today, magazine publishing. I wouldn't start one, if I could help it. They suck the life right out of you. Running one is an eighty or ninety hour per week job for which you'll see less compensation than if you opted to manage a couple of restaurants for Ray Kroc, et.al.

If I HAD to start a magazine, it'd be a “Men's Magazine” called Do It! geared to the 16 to 22 year old male. Right. Sex, drugs, rock and roll, cars and cash. Beyoncé and whomever is the current wet dream equivalent of Britney Spears in a lip lock at the Music Awards, cleavage and camel toes in silver lamé would grace the cover. High-class trash.

Don't look at me like that. It's what sells. I told you I didn't want to...

So you want to play along? Visit Rfduck, the mememeister, at Blogdrive Insanity. Take some cracked corn, Jimminey...

"Fritz the Cat" image is copyright it's owner -- I found the image on some porn site and thought it'd illustrate the whole Do It! Magazine concept to a "T".

Old Farts, Unite!

Chuck Ferris, an AOL Journals blogger I faithfully read, had an interesting entry on "Senior Semantics" betwixt residents and staff in the “old folks home” (his words) he resides at. This all stemming from issues over the placement of personal property too high on shelves to be reached by the wheelchair bound. An interesting observation, to say the least.

Somewhat the opposite, I've had a running battle with the manager of the local super market (no sense naming names, he knows who he is) over the placement of low sodium V-8 juice. I have pointed out to him on several occasions that those of us with bad hearts or recently out of cardiac surgery for bypass and placed on low sodium diets are not likely to get down on our hands and knees to reach the desired bottle when it is placed on the bottom shelf (where he has insisted on having it placed despite repeated, polite requests to have it shelved just a shelf or two higher). I finally had to resort to writing the Chairman of the Board of Directors (it's a publicly traded company) concerning this matter. While it may have helped that I knew his wife had just left hospital after a quadruple bypass, the message seems to have come down, in no uncertain terms, to raise the product higher on the shelf.

Chalk one up for us old farts!

Monday Music Mambo – Repeat Day

Rfduck, mememeister supreme here at the land of Mambo and milkshakes, has this to say about that: “Hi all! Here we are with another mambo. Today is Hug Your Cat Day. That isn't very musical, is it? We'll do yesterday's theme, which was Repeat Day.”

That's all you have to do!

OK, here goes ... all links to YouTube videos of the original performer's videos. Enjoy!

John M. Scalzi's Weekend Assignment #168: Historical Excisions

So, feel up for a challenging, meaty Weekend Assignment? Because I have a topic this week that will require quite a bit of pondering. Ready? Here it is:

Weekend Assignment #168: For reasons best left unexplained, you have been allowed to excise one and only one person from the course of history. Which person would you choose to remove from history and why? That's right: Any one person you think history would be better without, you can now expunge. So who would it be -- and how do you think history would be changed with their absence? See. Told you it was one that would make you think.

This assignment comes with two rules. First, the person expunged has to be a human being; deities (and human iterations thereof) should be left out of this particular exercise, mostly because I'd like to avoid all the ranting such an excision would add. Second, try not to choose Adolf Hitler (because he's too easy) or either the current president or his predecessor (to avoid ranty political rantiness). Incidentally, picking either parent of any of these three folks just to get around this admonition is dirty pool. Other than that, pick whom you would like. This still leaves lots of potentially expungible historical figures.

Extra Credit: Favorite historical-themed movie. Because why not?

Dear John,

I am insufficiently conversant in modern history to do this topic the justice it deserves. And I spent Saturday with my wife on the road rather than conducting the kind of research this would require simply to obtain an overview. If I'd had my druthers, I'd still have spent the day with my wife, so that is merely an observation, not an excuse.

With that said, I do believe I would have seen to it that a wild boar or large python had “wandered” into the sleeping chambers of the young Saloth Sar, a scion of wealthy parents in the town of Prek Sbauv in Kampong Thom Province of central Cambodia along about 1930. I would arrange that said boar or large Burmese Python would choose the juvenile five year-old Sar as a suitable repast for the magnificent beast. Or, perhaps, a distracted servant could accidentally let Saloth slip while bathing, strike his head and suffer a eventually fatal contusion of the brain. Poison in his coconut milk, perhaps? Whatever it took, I'd arrange for it to happen, even if my life was forfeit if I succeeded.

Why would I wreak such a horrible death upon such an innocent unknown? Simple. He grew up to become the man known as “Pol Pot”. Leader of the Khmer Rouge. The murderer of over a million (or two) of his fellow Cambodians.

That's why.

And that is my failing, for I am unable to tell you what the benefits would be to the world of having those one to two million men, women and children back amongst the living. Perhaps a critical piece to the search for a cancer cure? A magnificent new recipe? A ouevre of music composition that rivals Beethoven? A leader who would have fostered the birth of democracy in that nation, thus putting shame to the nirvana espoused by the agrarian communist, Ho Chi Minh. The absence of the war in Vietnam? I can not say, as entropy may play a large role in the affairs of man upon earth. Perhaps a different, sicker man would have risen to power, killing five million Cambodians.

I can only hope that wouldn't have happened.

As I can only hope all is well with you, Krissy and the demon-spawn, Herself.

Wil

MEME: Sunday Seven - Episode 92

Patrick has this to say this week, “I’ll let you in on a little secret: sometimes, it’s difficult to come up with questions for these memes. I’ve done 91 editions of the Sunday Seven, and 164 editions of the Saturday Six, which translates into roughly 850 questions I’ve come up with. (I don’t count 90-something Reader’s Choice questions and I deducted more from the total so as not to count those memes that other people have written which I include in the Saturday memes.)?

“This week, I scanned the blog of a relatively new player here at Patrick’s Weekender, and found a different meme about fears. It’s one of those memes in which you highlight from a list those items that apply specifically to you. I decided to turn that into the topic for this week’s question here. MEME: Saturday Six - Episode 164

A little storm named Barry dropped by Charleston today and knocked out power briefly just as I was finishing up this week’s questions. Because of an earlier commitment, I wasn’t able to redo them and post until later. But at least the power outage only lasted a few seconds.

But before the questions, Ingrid of "A Very Simple Life" was first to play last week. Congratulations, Ingrid!

Here are this week's "Saturday Six" questions. Either answer the questions in a comment over here, or put the answers in an entry on your journal...but either way, leave a link to your journal so that everyone else can visit! To be counted as "first to play," you must be the first player to either answer the questions in a comment or to provide a complete link to the specific entry in your journal in which you answer the questions. A link to your journal in general cannot count. Enjoy!

1. When did you last compute the average number of miles to the gallon your car gets?
This afternoon ... 18.6, btw.
2. Do you use regular, midrange or premium octane fuel?
Regular fuel in the Saturn and the Suburban; premium fuel in the VW Touareg, much to my chagrin.
3. If you had to give up one or the other because of a government-mandated fuel-saving law, would you prefer to go without your car’s air conditioning or automatic transmission?
Well, giving up the automatic transmission will probably result in a net decrease in the overall fleet economy of the vehicles on the road, and I live where it's cool enough to get by most days without air, so the AC would be the sacrificial lamb in my case (as well as yours – government doesn't give choices).
4. Take the quiz: What muscle car are you?
Haven't I done this before? I haven't? Oh well...

What kind of Muscle Car are You? (pics)

1968 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
You are a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. You love your car....your friends love your car and thats whats most important to you! Your car really hauls ass! You feel bad that they aren't making Camaros anymore....but don't worry...cuz you know they'll be back!

Take The Quiz Now!

5. Of the cars you have driven and/or owned, which had the worst gas mileage? Did that have any impact on your decision to get rid of it or make plans to get rid of it?
The outright worst was a 1973 4WD ¾ ton pick-up with the 350 V8 and manual transmission towing a 5000 pound tractor and trailer. It got less than 7MPG in that configuration and was hell on clutch plates. By way of example, my 1978 ¾ ton pick-up with automatic transmission and a big block V8 with the same tractor and trailer would average 12 MPG. Sometimes bigger IS better.
6. On a scale of 1 to 10, with ten representing the most, how much will “environmental friendliness” have on your decision to buy your next vehicle?
We just bought the used Suburban, even though it is less than “friendly” to the environment because we need a vehicle with trailer-towing capacity that is comfortable for long trips to places like Florida and Louisiana; it had to have 4WD to cope with the snow (they just don't like to plow the roads late in the evening when my wife gets off work and her safety is number one in my book) and the ability to handle a big load(s). We were thinking it was probably going to be a full-size Toyota Tundra pick-up, but this deal sort of dropped into our laps, so we grabbed it. Any other vehicle purchased will probably have to be pretty environmentally friendly, because we are used to a 28MPG commuter car for most of our driving and aren't going to be happy with TWO gas guzzlers in our stable. That probably (hopefully) won't be a topic of discussion for a few more years, if I can help it.

President Bush: Aspergers? Hmm...

I was going to post this as a comment to a post over at ScreaminRemo's private AOL journal, but then thought to myself, "Self, that's enough for a standalone post at the Snooze." I'd post a copy of Remo's entry here, but then his Republican Overlords of Death, er, Officer of the Day, would find out just what a subversive he is and his days in the Pleasantville P.D. would be even fewer numbered than they are. Anyway, here I go:

Apropos of nothing, I watched the Prez do his thing today for about 10 minutes viz. the immigration reform bill. As you may recall, I am somewhere to the right of you on many things, Remo. But, when it comes to Bush and his toadies, I have less regard for him than for your "ants".

Watching him today doing his shuck and jive was excruciatingly painful. Then it came to me. I am reminded of nothing so much as a moderate functioning Asperger's Syndrome patient. Well intentioned, well rehearsed, functionally literate but hasn't a clue as to what he is saying or it's impact on his audience. He truly is a puppet of the machine ... well, a (fortunately) small part of the machine.

There is something just "not right" about the man. In an earlier, more primitive society, George and Barbara would have left him along side of the trail to wait for 'the last wagon to catch up' when they knew they were the tail end of the line all along. Know what I mean?

It is the President's "otherness" that puts me off. The very real suspicion that he's just "faking it". I know it is considered small-minded to think this way, but I'd shoot the man before I'd let him marry my daughter. For the good of the race.

And in Texas, "just because he needed killin'" is an affirmative defense.

Happy 1st day of my birthday month June! This week, we're going to have a theme--fictional characters :-) So fill in the blanks with them; please do refrain from using your husband/ wife/other non-fictional character!

1. I wouldn't toss _Penny Lane (Almost Famous)_ out of bed!
2. _Lindsay Lohan_ has no appeal for me whatsoever.
3. A good dream would involve me [meaning you] and _Julianne Moore_; we [meaning you and him or her] would _sail the Bay of Fundy_.
4. The sexiest man or woman in the movies is __; the sexiest man or woman on tv is _Marg Helgenberger_.
5. _Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lector_ portrays a wicked villian.
6. _Tony Soprano_ and _Rosie O'Donnell_ would make a great couple.
7. TGIF! Tonight I'm _chilling_, tomorrow my plans include _a ride_ and Sunday, I'll _watch NASCAR_!

So far, so good.

It's a work in progress, but I am OK with things so far. Some stuff on the sidebar needs adjustment.

I have to go visit a friend in hospital now. I'll work some more when I return.

Change Is Inevitable

I've been avoiding this for nearly six months. What, you may ask? Changing over to the new, easily customizable Blogger templates for the Snooze.

It's getting more difficult to maintain the old one, so I am going to bow to the PettyBees and try to change it over.

Hang on. It's likely to be a bumpy ride.

MEME: Wednesday Mind Hump – Smelly Feats of Footwork

Image found via Google Image Search at
Spaghettio's MySpace Page

Welcome to the hump! Today's theme is Best Foot Day, so today's questions all have to do with feet.

1. Football - what's your favorite football team (any level)?
Football isn't my thing. So, for geographic solidarity's sake, I say the New England Patriots.
2. Shoes - Describe your favorite pair of shoes.
Can't get them anymore – they don't make them and if they did, I couldn't afford them. Tretorn Tennis shoes, made with sueded leather uppers, pigskin liners and an XLT sole sewn, not just glued. They came in tan and were like walking in clouds. These days I use plastic Crocs.
3. Dancing - What do you think is the best music to dance to?
Sort of depends on what kind of dancing you want to do, now doesn't it, laddie? I mean, after all, ye wouldn't be trying to do Morris Dancing to Peter, Paul and Mary, would ye? Or imagine the difficulty trying to break dance to the Blue Danube waltz! Clog Dancing to nursery rhymes, perhaps? Ye gets my meaning, laddie? Ask a better question, hear?

Now I suppose you want to play, too. If that's so, just click on the link up top and you'll be trnsported on a magic carpet to the land of milk and honey, where all will be clear. Or so says rfduck, the mememeister. Just be sure to read the fine print and remember, “Rumpledforeskin!” There will be a quiz, m'dear.

Death Takes A Holiday?

Another funny. Why aren't more of the adverts on US television this funny?

Funny Commercial

I've been trying to find a favorite commercial from the '90's when I stumbled upon this and thought to share it with you. It looks like Maine in January only winter lasts nine months and the clip is a quickie -- only 29 seconds. About all I'm good for these days...
(wink, wink).

Flags Replaced With Swastikas in Wash.

Flags Replaced With Swastikas on Graves in Washington:
May 29 01:54 AM US/Eastern ORCAS ISLAND, Wash. (AP) -

Vandals burned dozens of small American flags that decorated veterans' graves for Memorial Day and replaced many of them with hand-drawn swastikas, authorities said Monday.

Forty-six flag standards were found empty and another 33 flags were in charred tatters Sunday in the cemetery, authorities said. Swastikas drawn on paper appeared where 14 of the flags had been."

This is just plain wrong. While I am at odds with the current administration and Congress over our presence in Iraq and the wisdom of continuing our endeavors, there is nothing that can persuade me this is an exercise of "free speech" or merely civil disobedience.

Hold protest marches, burn the flag (if you dare). This, however, is desecration of a grave and therefore, a criminal act. It should be investigated as same and those responsible should be caught and tried as adults, regardless of actual age (if you, like me, you suspect this to be the act of very misguided teenagers). If adjudged guilty, I suspect some serious jail time is in order. Particularly in light of the repeat attacks on the graves this Memorial Day weekend.

By the way, parents -- You ARE responsible for your children's acts until they are 21. Perhaps some jail time for you as a co-conspirator would drive that home.

MEME: Sunday Seven - Episode 91

May sweeps ended this past week, and most network shows have aired their big season-ending cliffhangers. It seems that there are more and more shows that are killing off characters to keep the drama alive.

Sometimes, a show has little choice, because a popular actor who played the role dies and there is no one else who could possibly play the character convincingly. But then there are those deaths when the actor either decides to leave the series or the writers just get the itch to kill someone off. That is the kind of character death that led me to this week’s questions.

But first, Allison of "We’re All Mad Here" was first to play last week. Congratulations, Allison.

On to this week's question!

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Name seven TV character deaths that stand out as being shockers.

I'm not sure I can think of seven...

  1. Lem on The Shield

  2. Lt. Colonel Henry Braymore Blake (Season 1-3) on M.A.S.H.

  3. Captain John Francis Xavier "Trapper" McIntyre (Season 1-3) on M.A.S.H.

  4. Leo Thomas McGarry on the West Wing

  5. Mrs. Landingham. on the West Wing

  6. Holly Gribbs, a rookie fresh out of the criminal justice academy who was killed off the first (pilot) episode of CSI (ok, ok, technically she doesn't die until the second episode, but still...)

MEME: Unconscious Mutterings -- Week 225

I say ... and you think ... ?

  1. Dancer :: tiny

  2. Intellectual :: Snob

  3. Direct :: Current

  4. Tolerate :: differences

  5. Post :: Notices, No Bills

  6. Instinctive :: behavior

  7. Brink :: Over the ...

  8. Regain :: dignity

  9. Repulsed :: monstrous

  10. Distressed :: furniture

So you want to play along, too? Just click on the banner above and be swept away to La Luna Niña's place, where a clean set of the words for this week and the comment box to leave a link to your answers is located. You'll be glad you did and that new sunburn from sitting out over this Memorial Day weekend will fade from your memory even faster than the balance in your checking account.

A Rite of Spring In Maine

Photo accompanies this story on the front page of this
weekend's edition of the Bangor Daily News

My wife, Louisiana born and bred, was startled and appalled at the thought of leaving caskets full of the deceased in subterranean mausoleums from first frost in early fall until after the last of the frost leaves the ground come spring, when she first came to live here. Now, eight years later, she completely understands this story in the Bangor Daily News:

"Last rites of spring: Waiting is a tradition born of necessity in Maine"

"One breezy, brilliantly sunny afternoon in early May, a small group gathered at the graveside of Everett C. Burns at Riverside Cemetery in Orono. The trees had yet to leaf out, but a nearby rhododendron had burst into bloom, and a flock of ducks quacked loudly overhead on their journey home." (click the link above to continue)

National Do Not Call Registry

We've been getting a lot of commercial calls lately for mortgage companies, satellite TV dealers and other telemarketers.

I thought they were just breaking the law. Not so, it turns out. Seems that the telemarketing industry got a permanent injunction against my state's "Do Not Call" registry AND my registration with the Feds had expired!

Well, let me tell you, I re-registered my phone just as quick as I figured out the cause of the problem.

To register your phone, or to check on the current status of the registration of your telephone number, go to the National Do Not Call Registry by clicking on the link here. All you have to lose are those annoying telemarketing calls...

John M. Scalzi's Weekend Assignment #167: Bad TV You Loved as a Kid

Weekend Assignment #167: You watched some bad TV as a kid. Tell us your favorites. Now, this doesn't mean you realized at the time it was bad. Just now, in the fullness of time, you recognized that your viewing choices left something to be desired. For the purposes of this assignment, try to stick with shows that were aimed at kids, although if you can't think of any, prime time shows are okay as well.

Extra Credit: How much TV did you watch when you were a kid? A lot? A little?

Dear John,

Best heed the wife's words of wisdom and take out the trash.

Speaking of trash (heheheh), Sky King was the trash TV that I remember with that thrill of guilty pleasure, curled up in the big chair in the den on a Saturday morning, all cartooned out, waiting for parents to be functional enough to make breakfast (cereal bowl at my feet, lest you think we were neglected children). Of course, I was in love with Penny King and thrilled when she, too, got her pilot's license like her “dad” Sky.

According to TV.com, the Sky King TV show premiered September 16, 1951 on NBC and went on to a nice, four season run, airing it's last episode in March, 1959. As one commenter says on that site, “A man and his plane battle bad guys.” What more could you want? Just add a couple of kids (niece and nephew – Sky wasn't married), a ranch manager, a slightly ambivalent sheriff, cattle rustlers and other malcontents, and you have a formula for a thoroughly modern, post-war, western soap. Truly trashy!

Despite Gloria Winters' portrayal as Penny, the real heroine of the series was Songbird.

She was the King's principal airplane. I think I actually cried when they retired Songbird 1. She'd been crash-landed more times than
Carters has pills, but mechanic Bob Carey (played by Norman Ollestad) had always managed to patch her up and get her flying again. She was a member of the family. I didn't understand the intricacies of network television or leases on airplanes back then. Just because CBS had picked up the franchise from NBC after they'd canceled the show wasn't any reason to come back with two slick new airplanes – it just wasn't right! That was the eye-opener for me. I rarely watched after that... Although, it turns out the plane change occurred because the old wooden “bamboo bomber” had become unsafe to fly and was sold off during a change of sponsors.

I whiled away far too many hours in front of the “boob tube” hoping for a glimpse of the milky mammaries (I was of that generation deprived of the teet in favor of the more modern “bottle” - blech!). Probably 4 hours of a Saturday morning and a couple of hours either side of supper during the week when my mother was working outside of the home or during inclement weather. Far less in good weather and when she was at home – she had no love of the tube.

I do hope you limit Athena's television viewing to a dull roar. I know we did and I am proud of the way our kids turned out. As to what to do with Athena during the summer, take a little advice from the “been there – done that” folks: camp. Summer “Bible Camp” if it will get your mother (or mother-in-law, for that matter) off your back about raising a “little heathen”. Simply because she needs the socialization and playtime with other kids, she's smart enough to question authority and the BS that comes along with the proselytizing, she might as well learn at a very early age what assholes Christians can be, and it gets her out from underfoot part of the day so you can get some writing and other writerly business done. Just be sure to avoid the Baptists and other fundamentalists in all varieties or they'll be camped out on your front lawn forever. Our local Jewish Community Center had a great half-day camp both kids enjoyed a lot (as opposed to the mutiny that arose when exposed to a Baptist Bible School – that only lasted one day). The town YMCA and YWCA had great summer programs, too. Anything that allows Athena to play with others her age and gets her away from your evil influence for part of the day would be a big boost to all of you retaining your sanity through the summer.

As always, look after the womenfolk and behave. You ARE being watched.

MEME: Saturday Six - Episode 163

There are days when I feel like taking a drive. Then there are days when I can go without even looking at a car. I haven’t decided which kind of day this is, yet, but it at least got me thinking about this week’s questions.

But before the questions, Gabrielle of "Questions of the Day" was first to play last week. Congratulations, Gabrielle!

Enjoy!

1. What color car do you drive?
We've got a silver car and a beige one and a very dark navy blue one. Depending on where we are going or what the plan of the day is, I drive whatever meets the needs of the trip.
2. How many cars have you had in the past of this same color?
None. In the past I've had blue of three different hues, three greens, two reds, a fluorescent orange, a black and a fake-wood paneled wagon with a white base.
3. What does this particular color mean to you?
Obviously, nothing special.
4. Take the quiz: What color car should you drive?

You Should Drive a Blue Car

You're the type of driver who isn't hung up on what brand or the color of the car you drive. You don't need a flashy car to show off your wealth or style. Instead, you go for value and reliability. You're quite practical. You're a great driver, but you don't show off. Part of your skill is not standing out on the road.

What Color Car Should You Drive?

5. Would you ever consider driving a car the color the quiz suggests?
Blue? Sure, no problem, so long as I am still in the North. White for the South – it's just cooler. But for melting snow and ice on a sunny day after a snow storm in Maine, a dark color is the thing.
6. Do you consider yourself the most-aggressive driver on the road, the least-aggressive, or something in between?
Just as there is ALWAYS someone tougher than you are, so too when it comes to aggressive drivers. I have driven race cars, but I'd not try to mix it up with someone from NASCAR, for instance. At least not if I was driving in a circle. To the left. Only.
