And Baby Makes Nil...

SkepChick brought it to my attention, now I pass it on to yours. Seems the Catholics are at it again. Hating humanity, that is. Seems the Inquisition and collaboration with Hitler and Mussolini, for example, wasn't enough for them, after all.

She describes how the Archdiscease of Massachusetts has chosen to pick up its ball and go home after being denied by the Commonwealth the "right" to discriminate against gay couples in the considerations of the Catholic Charities of Boston when making adoption placements.
Hatred and religion, hand in hand still. There are real reasons why I have no tolerance for religious institutions; this is a prime example.

Time To Buy A Serious Shredder

If you are at all like me, your mail is full of credit card offers each week. I usually cut them up and throw them out.

BIG MISTAKE.

Read all about how a man took a torn up credit card application, filled in a different address and cell phone number, mailed it in and soon had himself a $5000 bank card.

Meme: Weekend Assignment #102

Weekend Assignment #102: Life Out There?

This is big news: They've found evidence of liquid water on a moon of Saturn. And where's liquid water, there is the possibility (possibility! Possibility only) of life as we know it:

If Enceladus does harbor life, it probably consists of microbes or other primitive organisms capable of living in extreme conditions, scientists say.

David Morrison, a senior scientist at NASA's Astrobiology Institute, cautioned against rushing to judgment about whether the tiny moon could support life. "It's certainly interesting, but I don't see how much more you can say beyond that," Morrison said.

Which leads us to this week's Weekend Assignment:

Weekend Assignment #102: Do you honestly think there is life out there in the universe? And if so, what kind of life do you think it is?

Extra Credit: Name your favorite (fictional) alien creature.

Dear John,

Life as we know it on Saturn? Not bloody likely. Not anywhere else in this solar system, either.

That's not to say that some semblance of life might not be found someday on another spherical satellite of Sol besides “Earth” itself. But, “not in my lifetime” is a pretty safe bet.

But then you just had to get into that deep, dangerous well of speculation, didn't you? Life in the universe? Well, I don't believe in coinkydinks (coincidences, for the non-inebriated out there). So the prospect of life occurring on only one of a seemingly infinite number of planets is asking a bit more incredulity than I can muster. I suspect there are all sorts of planets supporting life, both as we know it, and so far beyond what Philip K. Dick could conjure on a good day, as to be unrecognizable.

Positing it is possible that humans, so-called “mankind” will manage to reach a soi generis maturation allowing these bipedal simians to look outward beyond the simple acquisition of “more, more, more,” I suspect what will be found in that distant, hoped-for future, will be an awfully large amount of nothing and a thimbleful of microbes and single-cell phenomena, with a soupcon of planets supporting plant life as we understand the meaning of plants. It may be centuries after the initial discoveries before the first mammalian or reptilian beings with a high-order civilization is discovered. May be thousands of years before an actual humanoid race is run into.

Or, the Federation may come swinging forth into our twenty-fourth century to extend an invite to join (before we blow up some incredibly important relay point at aphelion above the North Pole). The Talons may even now be fleeing their home system in search of a new planet to reestablish their civilization upon, now that their own, older version of Sol has gone cold and dim,

Or, then again, the universe is just waiting for the embargo to be lifted by Rotcod Ohw before overrunning us with the intergalactic equivalent of “spam.”

There you have it. Speculation without elimination. Forethought of malapropism.

Hugs and kisses to the Mrs.; give the wee munchkin a hug, too. Do tell her the bestest aliens in the whole, wide, wonderful universe are “Fuzzies” (see H. Beam Piper Little Fuzzy (1962) and Fuzzy Sapiens (1964) recounted in one volume in 1980 as The Fuzzy Papers, ACE, 1980.)

MEME: Tuesday Two - Episode 20

Tuesday Two - Episode 20

It has been a crazy couple of weeks...much going on, and many distractions to keep me away from more regular blogging. I'm blatantly cheating on this one, by backdating this entry so it'll still register on Tuesday! Sorry for the delay.

For those who have never played, the rules are simple: I offer two different questions, both related to the same topic, but you only choose one of them to actually answer.

Carly of " Ellipsis...Suddenly Carly" was first to play last week! Congratulations, Carly!

Each tenth edition of the Tuesday Two requires that you go back to a previous edition and answer the question you didn't answer the first time around. So if you were trying to avoid a topic, here's where you find out whether the gamble paid off or not. (Of course, if you still don't want to answer, I won't send any henchmen to your door if you still don't!)

So answer your previously-unanswered question from one of the two previous editions:

EPISODE 14: BLOGGING

or

EPISODE 15: FUNERALS

Choose A or B, the one you didn't answer the first time around, indicate which question you're answering, then either answer the question in a comment or answer it in your journal and include the link in a comment. (To be considered "first to play," a link must be to the specific entry in which you answered the question.)

Remember: choose one or the other...not both!

Saved by procrastination! I didn't answer the Funerals' Tuesday Two so I can pick and choose. And I choose “A”.

QUESTION A:
How do you feel about open casket viewings or visitations at funeral homes? Does it bother you to see the decedent or do you feel a more complete sense of closure from it?

Truth be told, I don't feel much one way or the other. It is merely so much meat. I suspect that the allure is for those who believe in an after-life, just to be sure Uncle Joe or Aunt Fanny is really dead. You know the type. The ones from Missouri, “the show-me state.” Where I harbor no such illusion, the display of putrefying meat is a minor curiosity. The really interesting thing at a funeral is the behavior of the survivors, at least for me. I recall demanding to see my mother in her casket, but that was the skeptic in me. She'd died in hospital 300 miles away and I hadn't seen her for the three weeks prior to her death. So, like the curious monkeys from the aforementioned Missouri, I was just making sure that some huge cosmic hoax wasn't being played upon my little brothers and I. I can excuse that, from this vantage point. I was barely 15 and the prospect of being a motherless child was a bit daunting, indeed. So actual confirmation of the nasty news was needed.

Bottom line, viewings and visitations are fine by me. It is “human” nature to poke the dead one with a stick. Still too many crocodiles in the river to actually believe the one on the bank in front of you isn't just pretending. And there's always the hope for a vicarious thrill when the poking elicits a response. Even if it is just a bit of gas...

MEME: Sunday Seven - Episode 27

I asked this question about the movies a while back, but since last night had everyone's attention on movies, I figured it was time to give books their fair shot.

But first, congratulations go to Carly, of "Ellipsis...Suddenly Carly," who was first to play for the third week in a row last week!

On to the challenge!

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Name up to seven books you own that you've read more than once.

Either answer the question in a comment or answer it in your journal and include the link in a comment. (To be considered "first to play," a link must be to the specific entry in which you answered the question.)

My answers:

  1. Friday, Robert Heinlein

  2. Time Enough For Love, Robert Heinlein

  3. Stranger In A Strange Land, Robert Heinlein

  4. Nature I Loved, Bill Geaghan

  5. Bushed, Frank Whitehouse Anderson

  6. Shikasta, Doris Lessing

  7. Dune, Frank Herbert

There's actually many more, those are the first seven that come to mind. Want to play along? Visit Patrick's Weekender for all the info needed to get started.

MEME: Monday Madness - Hobby Hubby

Otto took a moment away from her photography to say, “Let's talk about our hobbies... and so I don't forget, thank you for playing and have a wonderful week! =)”

1. How many hobbies do you have? Several. Wood butchering, photography, sea kayaking, and my most recent, model railroading.

2. Name at least one of your hobbies. Didn't I just do that?

3. What do you like about your hobby? They occupy the mind and the body without running the risk of STD's.
4. What keeps you from spending more time on any one of your hobbies? Oh, reading, music, television, computers, cooking, chauffeuring, etc. ad nauseum.
5. Do you have any hobbies that you haven't taken up yet, but would like to? When I win the POWERBALL, there's a whole slew of hobbies I'd like to take up. And, they mostly involve avoiding too many STD's, too.
6. Have you ever decided to give up a hobby? If so, why? I gave up Schutzhund after my last GSD, Nori, died. I just couldn't bring myself to devote that much time and effort again.

Want to play? Just visit Otto here and follow the directions.

Word of the Day: STURGEON'S LAW

Sturgeon's Law, n.

Brit. Forms: 19- Sturgeon's Law, Sturgeon's law. [<>Sturgeon (1918-85, born Edward Hamilton Waldo), U.S. science fiction writer + LAW n.1]

A humorous aphorism which maintains that most of any body of published material, knowledge, etc., or (more generally) of everything is worthless: based on a statement by Sturgeon (see quot. 1958), usually later cited as '90 per cent of everything is crap'.
Typically used of a specific medium, genre, etc., originally and esp. science fiction, and now freq. also of information to be found on the Internet. The aphorism was apparently first formulated in 1951 or 1952 at a lecture at New York University (letter to the O.E.D. from Fruma Klass, the wife of science fiction writer Phil Klass ('William Tenn'), 5 Dec. 2001), and popularized at the 1953 WorldCon science fiction convention (see J. Gunn in N.Y. Rev. Sci. Fiction (1995) Sept. 20).

And a tip of the hat to Dr. Doug, my best friend, for sending this my way. Thanks, Doug.

Meme: Weekend Assignment #101

Weekend Assignment #101: Very Hidden Talents

Here's a fun and simple topic for this week's Weekend Assignment:

Weekend Assignment #101: Name a talent that you don't have that you wish you did. This can also include talents you have a little bit of, but wish you had more.

Extra credit: Do you have any completely useless talents?

Dear John,

I've discussed in other editions of the Weekend Assignment talents I wish I possessed. Skill with paint, drawing, music, piano, guitar, hornpipe, mandolin. You get the idea. I played saxophone in Jr. High. I can't draw my way out of a wet paper bag. So enough about those.

A hidden talent I'd like to possess would be facility with auto body work. This is another aspect of the arts that I have no talent for, but I am constantly in need of, given the mega-tonnes of calcium chloride we put on the roads here as a deicing agent. I tend to keep my vehicles for a long time, until they no longer have a prayer of passing inspection due to rust. I prolong this agony by being a fairly decent mechanic when I put my mind to it. But I am ham-fisted when it comes to finessing Bondo and paint to look even remotely like the original finish. I end up with a mess and the body shop guys tear it all out and start anew. But still, it's one of those things I wish I could do well.

That's all for this week. Am mostly hunkered down, trying to stay warm. Spring is still a long ways away in these parts. Love on your women for me and try to meet that deadline, right?

Wil

P.S. Completely useless talents? Well, I suspect blowing bubbles with bubble gum would qualify...

Meme: Saturday Six -- Episode 99

Hang on, Elizabeth! We're just one away from the big one...the 100th edition of the Saturday Six! I'll have something special next week, but I'm sure the regulars already can guess what that will be! (Or can they?)

Yeah. They can.

In other news, Carly of "Ellipsis...Suddenly Carly" was first to play last week. Congratulations, Carly!

Here are this week's "Saturday Six" questions. Either answer the questions in a comment here, or put the answers in an entry on your journal...but either way, leave a link to your journal so that everyone else can visit! To be counted as "first to play," you must be the first player to either answer the questions in a comment or to provide a complete link to the specific entry in your journal in which you answer the questions. A link to your journal in general cannot count. Enjoy!

1. Have you given up anything for Lent? If so, what did you give up?
I've lent plenty of things over the years to folks who have failed to return the items, so yes, I have given up many things I've lent. (Update. Never mind.)
2. How prepared is your bathroom? Not counting the one you currently have open, how many unopened units of the following do you have waiting in your cabinets?
A. Tubes of Toothpaste - 1
B. Sticks of Deoderant - 0
C. Packs of Toilet Paper – 6 rolls
D. Bars of Soap – about half a brick (12 bars) of Irish Spring

3. Has a commercial for any specific medication ever prompted you to visit your doctor to discuss either the illness or symptoms the advertised product treats? If so, did you ask the doctor to prescribe that specific medication?
Nope, I'm not particularly moved by the advertising for Rx drugs. I have asked for Viagra, but was turned down. Seems it could be fatal when combined with Nitrogycerin. Then again, I probably wouldn't NEED the Nitro if I had access to Viagra...
4. Take this quiz (if you haven't already!): What part of fall are you? (Hey, since Spring is almost here, why not!)

You Are Apple Cider

Smooth and comforting. But downright nasty when cold.

What Part of Fall Are You?

5. Which is more full right now at your home: your kitchen trash bag, your vacuum cleaner bag, your wallet, your stomach, or your car's fuel tank?

6. If the blog gods imposed some new law that says you could only participate in one regularly-scheduled meme per week, other than the Saturday Six, Sunday Seven or Tuesday Two, which one would you choose? (Leave a link to the most recent edition if you wish!)

I'd probably continue to participate in John M. Scalzi's “Weekend Assignment” if I had only one choice.
If you have a Reader's Choice question you'd like to see asked (and answered), click the e-mail link in the profile and send it to me.

MEME: Junebugg's Folly

On a blog jog, I stumbled blearily onto Junebugg's "Wasted Days, Wasted Nights". She had this as her latest post, and I've copied it, self-tagged into participation. Go for it, friends and enemies mine...

If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, (even if we don't speak often or don't really know each other) please post a comment with a COMPLETELY
MADE UP AND FICTIONAL memory of you and me. It can be anything you want - good or bad - BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE. When you're finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people DON'T ACTUALLY remember about you!

QUIZ: How Scary Are You

Witnit is on a binge lately, trying to convince the world he isn't all bad. He points to his results on this quiz as evidence in support of that premise.

Bah humbug.

I, on the other hand, don't give a rat's ass what you think of me...

You Are Creepy

Serial killers would run away from you in a flash.

Operation: S.P.A.W.N. Successful

Congratulations, Simon and Amy.

Operation: S.P.A.W.N. (Small Person Approaches Wondrous Nascency) was wildly successful yesterday around 4:45 PM MT.

A baby boy came into the world in the usual way, like they usually do ... on Ralph Lauren towels astride a king size bed in Canada, after the Doctor sent Amy home to Simon to labor a while. Gives proof to the old saying that second babies come down the ways slicker than greased owl shit...

QUIZ: How Open Minded Are You

You Are 56% Open Minded

You are a very open minded person, but you're also well grounded.

Tolerant and flexible, you appreciate most lifestyles and viewpoints.

But you also know where you stand firm, and you can draw that line.

You're open to considering every possibility - but in the end, you stand true to yourself.

Shelly made me do it. Some of the questions gave me pause, but overall, it's a no-brainer.

Wednesday Mind Hump

Hi humpers! All recovered from Mardis Gras? I sure hope so. Today's Mind Hump has a very strange theme - National Pig Day! Let's roll around in the mud and mind hump.

1. Who's the better pig - Babe, or the pig from Charlotte's Web (can't remember his name)?
Babe is the better pig let of these two porcine slackers...
2. What's your favorite pork-related food, if you eat pork?
I loves me some bar-b-cued pulled pig meat with lots of sauce. Mmmm...pig!
3. When you want to get a pig's attention, you yell "SOOOOOOEEEE!" What should we yell to get YOUR attention?
“Woof, woof, arroof” works for me.
4. Random, non-pig question: Do you watch American Idol?
Not bloody likely.
The rules are, there are no rules!!! All you need to do is copy and paste the above questions into your blog and add your responses. After you've finished, return here and leave us a comment so we'll know you've humped. Be sure your hump is linked back to http://bdinsanity.blogdrive.com so others can hump too.
