MEME: Monday Music Mambo - Week 111

Rfduck regales us with tales of his triumphant return: "Hi everyone! I'm back, and it's time to do the mambo. This week's theme is Say "Cheese" Day. What do you say "Cheese" for? Photographs. And where do you find photographs in music? Album covers!"

1. What's your favorite album cover from your collection?
Out of the hundreds of album covers over the years, my favorite has to be the original Pearls Before Swine cover on their first album, One Nation Underground, because it is an extract of a portion of Hieronymous Bosch's Hell panel from the triptych Garden of Earthly Delights. It was my first introduction to the work of Bosch and I fell in love with his expressive art immediately.
2. What album cover makes you wonder what the designer and/or band was thinking?
Somewhere along about the time I returned to Maine in the seventies, album covers and music in general ceased to be a topic of conversation or consideration during my day. Sad to say, nothing at all comes to mind. Over the years, there have been some hellacious choices made by artists that know better. But nothing sticks in memory. That's been happening a lot, lately.
3. Do you own the White Album by The Beatles or the Black Album by Metallica?
Yes. Doesn't everyone over the age of 45?

The rules are, there are no rules!!! All you need to do is copy and paste the above questions into your blog and add your responses. After you've finished, return here and leave us a comment so we'll know you've Mamboed. Be sure your Mambo is linked back to http://bdinsanity.blogdrive.com so others can dance too.

Remember, there are no right or wrong answers. If one of the questions doesn't inspire you then simply "pass" it. Just use your imagination and dance like crazy!

If you don't have a blog or you're an exhibitionist *woo hoo* feel free to Mambo right here in our comments section. There's absolutely no pressure ... although it's called the Monday Music Mambo you can Mambo on any day.

Until next time, this is your music-lovin' Mememeister saying have a good Monday and a good Mambo!

MEME: Sunday Seven - Episode 49

The heat wave may have had some of you searching for cooler locations. But a break from the heat is only one climate factor: some areas are more prone to tornadoes or hurricanes. Some have nightmarish winters. Some even have the threat of earthquakes to contend with. In any case, a change of scenery is the topic of today's edition.

But first, Cat, of "Sweet Memes," was first to play last week for the second week in a row! Congratulations again, Cat!

On to this week's question!

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Name seven cities you'd like to live in that you have not already lived in before.

  1. Memphis

  2. Kansas City

  3. Chicago

  4. Tampa

  5. New Orleans

  6. Boston

  7. San Francisco

MEME: Saturday Six - Episode 121

Patrick confesses "Okay, I've been a bad boy. The "Saturday Six" was late this week, although I will point out that it is still Saturday in the Mountain Time Zone. But let it never be said that I would miss an opportunity to turn reality into a question: one of the six this week will deal with that very topic!

"But first, Gabrielle of "A Metamorphoself of Gabrielle" was first to play last week. Congratulations, Gabrielle!

"Here are this week's "Saturday Six" questions. Either answer the questions in a comment there, or put the answers in an entry on your journal...but either way, leave a link to your journal so that everyone else can visit! To be counted as "first to play," you must be the first player to either answer the questions in a comment or to provide a complete link to the specific entry in your journal in which you answer the questions. A link to your journal in general cannot count. Enjoy!"

1. How many different time zones have you lived in? Which one would you most like to live in?
Three? Four? Let's see... Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific – Yep, that about covers it.
2. What is the current setting of your home's thermostat? Do you adjust it up or down based on the time of day, or leave it at one setting at all times?
The A/C is set to Fan at the moment and we haven't any central heating. It is adjusted according to the weather outside and my wife's desires for a cool room to sleep in.
3. Go to your bedroom closet (or the closet in which you keep the majority of your clothes. Take a quick glance: what color do you see the most of? Is this color your favorite color? If not, why do you have more of it than your favorite color?
Blue and that IS my favorite color for clothing.
4. Take the quiz: What kind of house are you?

Take the quiz:
What Kind of House Are You?

McMansion
Self involved much? For all the self aggrandizing you do, you'll never change the person you actually are. So climb down from your pedestal and pay attention to other people for a change.

Quizzes by myYearbook.com -- the World's Biggest Yearbook!

5. Imagine your dream house: how many stories would your ultimate home have?
About sixteen, if you count the lighthouse; otherwise, about four stories should do it (heheheh). The elevator would only go to the third floor – access to the fourth floor would be through the master suite only.
6. Ripped from the Headlines: An underage teenager decides he does not want to undergo a particularly rough regimen of chemotherapy to treat his cancer. With his parents' blessing, he decides to pursue an alternate treatment to be supervised by a clinic that is outside of the country. Should a court intervene and force the teen to undergo the "traditional" treatment? How much does the prognosis for successful treatment with the chemotherapy affect your judgment?

A tough call. The State, through it's child protection division, has the legal obligation to assure that children are protected from abuse. It could be argued that failure to provide a treatment commonly accepted by the medical community as effective would result in a dereliction or malfeasance of that duty, with abuse as the ultimate result. That is the logic of those cases which have required, indeed, compelled Christian Science parents to allow the use of antibiotics to treat a bacterial infection.

A similar leap of legal faith could result in a Court of competent jurisdiction finding that compelling the parents of said teenager to undergo the chemotherapy would, in fact, be the antithesis of abuse and would (potentially) render the child free of disease, whereas the alternative treatment cannot be shown to have any efficacy whatsoever when compared to the treatment successes of conventional chemotherapy. Therefore, it would appear that a Court, presented with the facts as you provided them above, would be compelled, on the appearance of efficacy alone, to rule that the child's parents must require their offspring to undergo conventional treatment and then, and only then, may the child be subjected to an unproven course of “alternative treatment.” To do otherwise would result in the greater harm and expose the minor child to almost certainly mortal consequences.

Meme: Unconcious Muttering -- Week 183

Free association
is described as a "psychonanalytic procedure in which a person is encouraged to give free rein to his or her thoughts and feelings, verbalizing whatever comes into the mind without monitoring its content." Over time, this technique is supposed to help bring forth repressed thoughts and feelings that the person can then work through to gain a better sense of self.

That's an admirable goal, but for the purposes of this excercise, we're just hoping to have a little fun with the technique. Each week I'll post ten words to which you can respond to with the first thing that comes to mind.

"Rules are, there are no rules." There are no right or wrong answers. Don't limit yourself to one word responses; just say everything that pops into your head. AND you don't have to have your words up on Sunday. Take all week if you want! Read the FAQ for more information.

John Scalzi's Weekend Assignment #123: Dog v. Cats -- There Can Be Only One

Weekend Assignment #123: Dogs. Cats. There can be only one! Choose which you prefer and tell us why. No weaseling out, people -- you can't say "oh, I like them both." You must choose! Don't worry: In real life all the cats or dogs won't disappear if you choose the other species. Honestly, as long as you keep food coming, everything will be groovy with your pets. So pick one, already. We promise we won't tell. And pets can't read.

Extra credit: Isn't it obvious? Cat pictures! Dog pictures! Go nuts!

Dear John,

Hope you've met all your deadlines and have managed to dodge the the swinging axe of layoffs that has recently cut through AOL. I know, even if you have been chopped off by the PTB's of T-W/AOL you will do just fine. So onward to the matter at hand, er, paw.

My screen name says it all, really. Olddog299. Which I took because some miscreant had grabbed plain old “Old Dog” which is how I'd been known on IRC for some six years before becoming involved with some folks on AOL and making the switch when my University of Maine account went south in 1996. I love dogs. They love me. We (dogs and I) have been deeply in love with one another for well over fifty years. The fact that I am currently owned by a total wuss of a dog and some dozen different cats notwithstanding, I am a dog man. I even look like a dog (some would say werewolf – close enough for government work). I approach the world in the same way my German Shepherd Dogs did. Reserved, but open to new ideas and experiences; cautious, prepared to defend myself and my loved ones to the death at all times; ready to kill if I must without regrets or hesitation but just as willing to allow you into the inner circle if you prove worthy.

I dislike the aloof, “Fuck You” attitude of cats. I abhor cat boxes but the highway dominates our “front yard.” The sad reality is that cats are similar to teenagers, they think they are immortal and can't be bothered to move out of the way of an oncoming vehicle – the vehicle should move for them. Of course, the world doesn't work that way, so cats around here either learn to stay out of the road or become food for the crows.

Dogs have been a major focus of my life in the past as a breeder, a competitor in AKC obedience and USA Schutzhund and as a member of local clubs in Maine and Vermont. Cats have been a footnote. That's as it should be.

John, take good care of the Alpha female and your cub. They're “Best In Show” and “Best Puppy” in my book.

wil

P.S. Extra credit – I've posted pictures of my dog(s) and cats in the past. Use Blogger's search function up at the top of the blog. It works a treat!

Too Hot To Hump...

HOT.

I'm sure it is hotter wherever you are in North America, but it is too hot here in Maine for Maniacs like me.

And muggy (how muggy is it?).

Muggy enough to rival one of Florida's Three Shirt Days. You know the ones – go off to work with a clean, starched shirt. Replace the soggy, wrinkled, mess after lunch with another clean, starched shirt. Repeat at 6:00 so you can take your wife out to dinner.

That's how muggy it is.

~~~
The Wednesday Mind Hump is canceled this week, due to a summer cold (rfduck's, not the Hump's).
I'm hiding indoors, avoiding the heat and generally being totally useless.
So what else is new?
~~~

Keep cool. Stay hydrated. Avoid exertion. Pay your bills. See you in the funny papers.

MEME: Monday Madness Miscellanea

Otto says, "I'd like to thank you ALL for playing! I hope you enjoy these because I'll be typing them as I think of them! =) Have a great week!"

1. Do you have a photo blog? If so, feel free to share the link with us! Yes, but I haven't posted a new image for public consumption in a year or so, so I guess the real answer is no...
2. How many pets do you own, and what are their names? If none, have you had a favorite pet in the past? Let's see, there's Willow the Wonderdog, Lucifer, the inside cat, Alex (Alexandra) the Cockatiel, Pumpkin, Grace, Little P, Patches, Smudge, George, Blackie, Whitey, Fred & Socks, the feral cats. And now Lexy Cat, my brother's feline companion. How many's that? Socks is going to a new home just as soon as we're sure he's 8 weeks old... so deduct one Real Soon Now.
3. How many times a week does the carpet in your house get vacuumed? No carpet? How many times a MONTH do your floors get mopped? Not often enough.
4. Which room in your house do you spend the most time in? The "living room" if I am with my wife, the "library" when I'm at the computer. But, in reality, the one room that sees me most consistently is probably the bedroom...
5. Have you read any good books lately? John Scalzi's "The Ghost Brigades" and Charlaine Harris' "Dead As A Doornail." I'm in the middle of Todd McCaffrey's "Dragonsblood" and just starting Leonard Cohen's "
The Favourite Game."
6. What is your biggest source of news? (Newspaper? Television? Radio? Other?)
These days, sad to say, it's the internet, followed by television and newspapers. The only time I pick up a newsmagazine is when waiting for food at China Light. I prefer to listen to Radio Paradise over the internet for the music content -- they have no news. Sometimes, if I'm caught in rush hour traffic, I'll turn on Maine Public Radio and listen to All Things Considered. The local paper's web site is my home page.

If you want to play along, click the link at the top of this entry and you'll be swept away into the Monday Madness funhouse and comments emporia.

MEME: Sunday Seven - Episode 48

After my recent rant about environmental alarmists who talk about "Global Warming" at every possible turn, I thought that it's only fair to encourage others to do something about the phenomenon. That's the topic of this week's question.

(And you might want to have a look at sites like this one, this one, or this one, for assistance in coming up with your answers.)

But first, Cat, of "Sweet Memes," was first to play last week. Congratulations, Cat!

On to this week's question!

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Name seven things you have done or would be willing to do to reduce your contributions to global warming.
  1. Drive a more fuel efficient vehicle, like maybe a Hummer instead of a GMC 1 Ton Dualie Pickup...
  2. Replace my air conditioners with more efficient models when these wear out in a decade or two...
  3. Reduce the number of baths I take, thus reducing the amount of hot water needed, which will reduce the amount of electricity that needs to be generated.
  4. Stop drinking soda pop (there's a real source of Carbon Dioxide).
  5. Reduce the number of feral cats that look to me. Those damn cat farts really foul the ozone layer...
  6. Build more nuclear power plants. They have no emissions, until they have a "big burp"...
  7. Force a universal switch to solar power so the entire economy of Western civilization collapses, resulting in global economic depression, global warfare and the death of all mankind. That'll teach those butt-fucking greenies...

Restaurant Review: The Maine Chowder & Steak House

Last night, SWMBO¹ and I supped at the Maine Chowder House in Belfast, Maine. It's under new ownership, with a new “chef” and I was curious as to the changes. I've visited this restaurant off and on since I was a small child. It overlooks picturesque Penobscot Bay from atop a hillside next to US Route 1 just beyond Perry's Nut House. I remember quite clearly rolling down that hill with my brothers while my grandmother looked on in horror at our behavior (heheheh) some forty five years ago.

Anyway, it'd been a while since I'd last visited. We chose the hottest day of Summer 2006 to visit. Official temperature at the Bangor International Airport (where all the troop flights come in to clear customs from overseas) yesterday was 87°F. while it was 82°F. down the coast in Rockland. We were midway; split the difference and it was probably 85°F. outside.

Inside, it wasn't. It was closer to 100° and for reasons known only to the wait staff, the windows were closed. Now, most of the time on the coast it doesn't get over 80° so air conditioning isn't a high priority. But there was only one small window unit in the office attempting to provide coolth to a 3000 s.f. dining room. The kitchen must have been Stygian. I know the table next to ours was most pleased when I got up and opened the windows.

Service was prompt (it was 7:45 PM, so the rush was well past) and the young man was attentive, keeping my wife supplied with her cold beverage of choice.. For an appetizer I had fried calamari while the better half opted for fried onions. Both were in a flour-based tempura batter that was fresh, light, flaky and seasoned very lightly. Somehow, set-ups of napkins and utensils were forgotten in the rush to get us seated after the party of eight ahead of us had been ensconced in their own corner of the room, so I can truly say they were “finger licking good” without stepping on KFC's territory.

Both of us were too hot to appreciate salads, so we went straight for our entrees. My wife had chosen deep fried Maine shrimp, homemade french fries and coleslaw, all good, but the fries could have been held in ice water a while longer to truly crisp them and the slaw was a bit on the bland side. Meanwhile, I'd ordered a “Portuguese Fisherman's Kielbiesse Stew” which was essentially a bouillabaisse with kielbasa in a roma tomato and kale base containing clams, mussels, scallops, calamari, white fish (haddock and pollack), a smidgen of lobster and crab in a rich broth fortified with cognac and sauterne.

Frankly, the “stew” was delightful in flavor, but the actual cooking method employed left something to be desired. Cook had some problem with insufficient heat on the stove, or the shellfish had (recently) passed from the heat, or s/he had had a bit too much cognac. Rather than allowing the clams and mussels to open on their own, it appears from the amount of broken bits of shells in the dish that our souschef felt it was necessary to mash the daylights out of them with a large mallet. Two hadn't opened at all (one each, cherrystone (!) clam (not an indigenous variety) and mussel, to be exact). I reiterate it was most tasty and very filling, there were no repercussions from the apparently moribund shellfish and I heartily recommend ordering same, just not late on a Saturday night on the hottest day of the year.

Dinner for two with no alcohol nor dessert (we were too full) with tax and tip was just over $70. Not so high as to give someone from Southern New England, New York or Jersey pause, but substantial for a native Mainer. Half the cost is in the view and it is truly unsurpassed. I'd give them a warm middle-of-the-road recommendation, without being too enthusiastic. You can find better food and better views, just not in one location. They have a ways to go to bring themselves back to the consistently good food of the past. But you can't beat the view with a stick...

The web site is displaying menus from yesteryear and I didn't pay close enough attention to see if the hours are the same. The image on the homepage bears no relationship to the view as the lighthouse depicted is outside Portland, almost a hundred miles away!

MEM: Saturday Six - Episode 120

Hope you're enjoying the summer but staying cool. One way do that is to get out of the dangerous heat long enough to answer these six questions!

But first, Wil of "The Daily Snooze" was first to leave a link to the specific entry in which he answered the questions, so he was first to play last week. Congratulations, Wil!

Here are this week's "Saturday Six" questions. Either answer the questions in a comment here, or put the answers in an entry on your journal...but either way, leave a link to your journal so that everyone else can visit! To be counted as "first to play," you must be the first player to either answer the questions in a comment or to provide a complete link to the specific entry in your journal in which you answer the questions. A link to your journal in general cannot count. Enjoy!

1. If you had to choose a theme song for your blog, which would would you choose and why?
Summertime” as sung by Janis Joplin – it resonates with me. I'd loved the George Gershwin original from Porgy and Bess since childhood.
2. Which was the last kind of doctor you visited, and which one do you need to visit the most?
The pulmonologist was the last; the endocrinologist is the one I see the most often; the cardiologist should probably be my most frequent visit. My primary care provider isn't a doctor – she's a Nurse Practitioner.
3. What's stopping you from making the appointment with the doctor in #2?
Money. The new insurance company appears to have taken the attitude that only visits to the FNP will be covered and then only twice a year.
4. Take the quiz: How scary are you?

You Are Creepy

Serial killers would run away from you in a flash.

How Scary Are You?

5. What's the most exotic drink you've tried recently? Did you like it enough to have another at some point in the future?
Mango Peach Snapple. It wasn't bad – I'd drink it again.
6. Who was the last person you had an online conversation with? How long had it been since you had previously talked to that person either on the phone or in person?

The last was a fellow named Dale. I think the last time we'd actually talked was sometime around Christmas, but it may have been Labor Day.

Giving Used Truck Dealers A Bad Name

Need a new vehicle? This little story from the NewsChannel 5 Network: "Bill Heard Chevrolet in Antioch, Tennessee" should be enough to convince you that this is a dealership to avoid, forever.

Better yet, avoid Chevrolet forever for letting this bastard keep his franchise.

I've been a proud owner of a Chevrolet truck for over 28 years, but after reading about this piece of slime, I wouldn't have another one in my dooryard ever again. I submit you should consider the same stance.

MEME: Wednesday Mind Hump -- Randomly Generated

Rfduck, lifting his bleary eyes from his search for the One True Lyric to “Danny Boy” muttered sarcastically, “Greetings! Ready for another mind hump? I don't have a theme for today, so I'll just ask random questions. Until next time, this is your music-loving mememeister wishing you a happy hump day!”

1. What's your favorite beverage? It used to be Bourbon 'n' Branch back in the bad, old days. These days, I get my thrill from a Decaf, black iced coffee or a decaf, unsweetened iced tea. (how do you unsweeten iced tea, anyway?)
2. Have you ever been surfing? If so, how did you like it? I have gone body surfing in Maine, Virginia, Washington and Florida and long board surfing in California. I sucked at board surfing. Who knew you needed to do thirty things really well all at once? But even though I took the cake in the suckage category, I adored surfing. These days, I suspect it'd be an instant recipe for broken neckage.
3. What do you like to put on a hot dog? A sweet young thang... Oh, never mind, my bad. Ketchup and raw onions.
4. Who's your favorite Australian? She had the nom de guerre of “Bernadette” and she was a sweetie; very easy on the eyes. She pioneered the concept of an “online girlfriend” porn site. Constant harassment by the Australian government accompanied by a very trying course of treatment for breast cancer resulted in her retirement. These days, it's my favorite ex-pat pussycat, Shauna, author of the long-running blog “What's new, pussycat” and the tales of her sister, her husband and buds, her travels, the MotherShip and herself. That be good reading...

On another note, a work in progress, a poem (free verse) about my brothers and I has appeared on my writing journal, Snoozelets. That is all.

The rules are, there are no rules!!! All you need to do is copy and paste the above questions into your blog and add your responses. After you've finished, return here and leave us a comment so we'll know you've humped. Be sure your hump is linked back to http://bdinsanity.blogdrive.com so others can hump too.

Remember, there are no right or wrong answers. If one of the questions doesn't inspire you then simply "pass" it. Just use your imagination!

If you don't have a blog or you're an exhibitionist *woo hoo* feel free to hump right here in our comments section. There's absolutely no pressure ... although it's called the Wednesday Mind Hump you can hump on any day.

Suicide, when the time comes.

Thirty-nine. Seems like yesterday.

7. How many hours of sleep (including naps) do you need each day?
