MEME: Sunday Seven -- Episode 84 -- Faces

I hope you're having a great Easter Sunday. This week's question should be fairly simple, so that you can get back to your family or friends or do whatever kinds of things you do, if any, to celebrate or reflect upon the day.

Then again, it might be more complicated than it seems. Maybe you'll want to think about it and come back later. As always, it's up to you!

But first, Erika of " Projects of the Mind and Soul" was first to play last week. Congratulations, Erika!

On to this week's question!

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Name seven of the very first things you notice about a person -- male or female -- when you meet them fir (sic) the first time.

  1. Primary sexual characteristics (gender, boobage, package)

  2. Age

  3. Height

  4. Weight

  5. Eyes: color, shape, set.

  6. Hair

  7. Hand grip & skin texture

Cyanide, Anyone?

Stole this from a Doc's blog, but have forgotten who's it was. Sorry about that. This joke tickled me no end...

A woman walks into a pharmacy and goes straight up to the pharmacist, looking him directly in the eye.

"I need to buy some cyanide," she says.

"Why?" asks the pharmacist.

"I want to poison my husband."

The pharmacist is aghast.

"You can't do that! I can't sell you cyanide! The police will come; you'll go to jail; I'll lose my license! I can't give you any cyanide!"

The woman reaches into her purse and pulls out a photograph of her husband in bed with the pharmacist's wife.

"Ah," says the pharmacist. "You didn't tell me you had a prescription."

MEME: Saturday Six - Episode 156 - Easter Edition

I hope you're having a nice Easter weekend. I've gotten a lot of things accomplished so far, and I still have a full day left! I could get used to three-day weekends! Incidentally, this week's edition marks the completion of three years of weekly questions! Next week, there will be a special edition of the Saturday Six to start off year four!

Last week, Nichole of "My Two Cents" was first to play. Congratulations, Nichole!

Here are this week's "Saturday Six" questions. Either answer the questions in a comment here, or put the answers in an entry on your journal...but either way, leave a link to your journal so that everyone else can visit! To be counted as "first to play," you must be the first player to either answer the questions in a comment or to provide a complete link to the specific entry in your journal in which you answer the questions. A link to your journal in general cannot count. Enjoy!

1. Do you believe that there is some form of intelligent life on a planet other than Earth?
Yes. I have seen an inexplicable airborne phenomenon which leads me to believe there is “something out there.”
2. If there was, and we were to encounter it, which do you think would do more harm to the other: the Earthlings or the Extra Terrestrials?
We are a race of killer monkeys. Unless the encounter occurs in the near future (while we're still out-gunned), I'd fear for a positive outcome. We've managed to kill off or severely threaten the continued existence of most other predators on the planet.
3. If a close friend or family member told you that they had been kidnapped by aliens, how likely are you to believe them if they can offer no physical evidence?
Seeing “inexplicable airborne phenomenon” is one thing; being kidnapped or otherwise messed with is quite another. In short, no, without evidence to the contrary, I'd view all claims of alien abduction as figments of over-fertile imaginations.
4. Take the quiz: How likely is it that you would be abducted by Extra Terrestrials?

You have a 19% chance of being abducted

You have a fairly poor chance of being abducted. You are skeptical about the existence of aliens, but you allow that they could exist somewhere. Maybe.

Take this quiz at QuizGalaxy.com

5. If you could fly in a spaceship to get a close look at any of the planets besides Earth, which would you choose and why?
I'd start with the first Class M planet in the Sirius system. According to a recent movie, it is a planet of hyper-intelligent canids who communicate via telepathy and manipulate tools and materials via telekinesis.
6. If you had the chance to live on a fully-developed colony on Mars, would you do so?
I'm not sure that I would, given NASA subcontractors' recent glaring failures. Who wants to live in a 'built by the lowest bidder' habitat, anyway?

John M. Scalzi's Weekend Assignment #159: Your Pen Name

Weekend Assignment #159: You've decided to become a writer under a pen name. What pen name do you choose? Because, after all, writers use pen names all the time -- sometimes to maintain anonymity, sometimes to start a new career when their writing career under their real name has crashed and burned, and sometimes just because they want a different name than the one they were born with. You can assume any of the reasons for taking up a pen name. (No fair using a name that's taken: Your pen name can't be "Steve King" or "Jonathan Grisham" or some such.)

Extra Credit: Using this Anagram Maker, share an amusing anagram of your name.

Dear John,

I hope this finds you hale and hearty as you start off on your book tour. Interesting notion, this business of pen names. I can't help but wonder if it isn't your innate shyness raising its wee white flag in a feeble attempt to say “Stop the world, I want to get off!” (Don't we all?)

Anyway, if I ever chose to publish under a pen name, the first that comes to mind is “Derek Domino”. Yes, that is awfully close to the name of a tragically conceived band led by Eric Clapton in the seventies; why do you ask?

Well, the reason behind that choice lies with Clapton's own view on the band as a make believe ruse:

We were a make believe band. We were all hiding inside it. Derek and the Dominoes--the whole thing....assumed. So it couldn't last. I had to come out and admit that I was being me. I mean, being Derek was a cover for the fact that I was trying to steal someone else's wife. That was one of the reasons for doing it, so that I could write the song, and even use another name for Pattie. So Derek and Layla - it wasn't real at all.”(Decurtis, Anthony (May 1998). Rocking My Life Away, Duke University Press, ISBN 0-8223-2184-X , as cited in the Wikipedia article on “Derek and the Dominoes”)

So an assumed name from the name of a band that was assumed. How fittingly ironic is that?

Of course I am neither a musician nor married to one. Nor am I addicted to heroin and cocaine, for that matter. What does that have to do with pen names, anyway?

If I was writing children's books, I think I'd use the nom de plume “Poppy Golightly”; Mysteries by Eric C. Q. Finder. Romances by Leslie Lovelace. Science Fiction by Robert Ulysses Sirius. You get the idea.

Give my best to your lovely wife and the demon spawn. Be sure to bring them back something nice from California in addition to the new strain of Novovirus. Best anagrams for my name that tickled my fancy were “Slim Whore” and “Miser Howl”...

More Season of Discontent

Around here, April is one of the cruelest months. While all of the rest of the lower 48 have begun their long swing into Spring, Winter still holds us in her icy grip. More like an icy blanket some 14 to 16 inches thick, actually. All of which have come down in the last 72 hours, starting with the little bit I showed you on Wednesday which nearly all melted away. But Thursday took care of that problem. By mid-evening when we got plowed out, I'd begun despairing of ever getting out of here again. When Willow the Wunderhund stared reluctantly from the porch at the white pudenda freezing crystals blocking her path to the happy dumping ground, I knew it was getting deep. See for yourself:

John M. Scalzi's Your Monday Photo Shoot: Blossoms and Blooms

The budding season of spring is bursting out all over the Scalzi Compound, and I expect in most other places, which has inspired what I think will be a cheerful Photo Shoot for us all:

Your Monday Photo Shoot: Take a snap of some of the latest blossoms and blooms near you.

Well, we'd had enough snow melt the past week or so for me to finally get a car down to camp to make sure it hasn't floated away or been broken into or collapsed from the weight of the snow. Darn near got stuck in the mud, though. At least four inches deep, and parking was a treat, too. Finally found a chunk of ledge to park one tire on so the whole thing couldn't just sink out of sight.

Then last night we got the white stuff you see in the photo below which I took around 1:00 in the morning after picking up SWMBO from work. Not going to be too many blooms for another couple of weeks yet. So take a gander at the rose hips in the entry before this one. They were shot on early June at Bass Harbor Light on Mt. Desert Island a while back. Closest thing to a bloom I have in my archives from here. Or you can look at the butterfly from a couple of years ago...

MEME: Wednesday Mind Hump -- Vitamin C Day

Rose Hips - Rosa Rugosa
An excellent source of Vitamin C

Rfduck quacked out the following after nearly choking on a wedge of Spanish Blood Orange, "Happy Wednesday! Let's do another mind hump. Today is Vitamin C day, and that means citrus!"

Name your favorite citrus fruits and your favorite dishes, drinks, desserts, etc. using citrus.

Well now, buckaroos, my favorite citrus fruit is the tangerine, followed by the navel orange and pink grapefruit. I'm fond of fresh squeezed orange juice, lemonade and lime juice in my iced tea. A wedge of lemon on fresh water fish, or a few limes to marinate and “cook” fresh salt water fish is de riguer. My favorite smoothie involves a fresh banana, fresh orange juice, fresh strawberries and lots of ice with a little protein powder to bind it all together. “Cointreau” is a favorite liqueur of mine and is also a wonderful addition to crepes.

Mustn't forget the lemon cheesecake, the key lime pie and the lemon meringue pie with a double espresso with a twist of lemon peel. Let's finish it all off with some fine brandy and a Portuguese cigarillo soaked in a mix of Cointreau and Benedictine. Voila!

YouTube - Alanis Morissette "My Humps" video

YouTube - Alanis Morissette "My Humps" video: "Alanis Morissette 'My Humps' parody video of the Black-eyed Peas hit video."

Interesting how far Alanis has come from the performer too shy to show all of her face, to this in your face, brazen sexuality, boob holding, ass shaking, crotch wagging woman seen here.

You've come a long way, baby!

MEME: Monday Music Mambo - Love Songs

Mememeister RFDuck took a moment from his labors photographing all of the buildings on the University of Oregon campus to say, “Hello world! Here's another mambo for your enjoyment. Today is Great Lover's Day.”

1. Name three of your favorite love songs.
This isn't my favorite category of songs, so bear with me. First thoughts turn to traditional songs, such as Fair Ellender or Danny Boy. More modern songs include Nat King Cole's Unforgettable and Mona Lisa. It'll be interesting to see what a whippersnapper, such as Mememeister RFDuck, has to offer from the perspective of one with his musical roots in the nineties.
2. Name three musicians well-known for making great love songs.
Paul McCartney, John Denver and Nat King Cole; Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Yolanda Bevan come to mind on the distaff side.
3. Name a song that's so good you'd write a love song for it (if it were an actual person). And tell us why.
Oh, my. Where to begin? No one is likely to ask me to write a love song to a love song, even at my rock-bottom rates! (I lack the requisite romantic genes for the job)

If it weren't already so smarmy, I suspect that Paul McCartney's Michelle from the Beatle's 1965 album “Rubber Soul” would fit the bill. It has the distinction, according to BMI, of being “the 42nd-most performed song of the 20th century” according to the Wikipedia article on the song. It is just so sweet and evocative of innocent love, puppy love that I can't help myself. If only the world were so simple!

The rules are, there are no rules!!! All you need to do is copy and paste the above questions into your blog and add your responses. After you've finished, return here and leave us a comment so we'll know you've Mamboed. Be sure your Mambo is linked back to http://bdinsanity.blogdrive.com so others can dance too.

Remember, there are no right or wrong answers. If one of the questions doesn't inspire you then simply "pass" it. Just use your imagination and dance like crazy!

If you don't have a blog or you're an exhibitionist *woo hoo* feel free to Mambo right here in our comments section. There's absolutely no pressure ... although it's called the Monday Music Mambo you can Mambo on any day.

Until next time, this is your music-lovin' Mememeister saying have a good Monday and a good Mambo!

MEME: Monday Madness -- April Showers Edition

Otto took a minute from her Spring Cleaning to say, “This week's questions, once again, come right off the top of my head! If you've emailed me with suggestions, please be patient. I haven't checked my email lately but will soon. I hope you all have a great week and thanks for playing Monday Madness!” =)

1. Where did you go on your last vacation? Niagara Falls
2. Would you go there again? Why or why not? Yes, but next time I'd stay on the Canadian side of the Falls because there's more to do with kids. These are typically joint vacations with the children & the grandmonsters.
3. How many vacations do you take in one year? About 0.5, judging by the past three years.
4. Where would you REALLY like to go on your next vacation, if money was no issue, and how long would you stay? I'd love to visit Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Shetlands for about a year.
5. Do you put a little money aside each week (or month) to save up for your vacation?
I would if I could; no income means no savings.

Sunday Seven - Episode 83

Thanks for all of the suggestions from last week's question that I could use as possible rewards for the big diet. I'm refining the list, although I'm leaving the Outback dinner on the list and I don't care what they say!

Since this is April Fools' Day, I seriously considered not posting a question today as a joke. Or maybe posting it tomorrow as if nothing had happened. I also considered posting a "Saturday Seven" and a "Sunday Six," but that probably would have confused me far more than anyone else.

In short, it probably wouldn't have been funny. And not being funny became the subject of this week's question!

But first, Ingrid of " AY! QUE VIDA! What a Life! . . . my thoughts, views, musings, ramblings . . ." was "first to play" last week, choosing to answer the questions in a comment here at Patrick's Weekender. (Though Team Gherkin was first to leave a comment, he didn't include the specific link, which, according to the rules, means that Ingrid is declared "first to play.") Congratulations, Ingrid!

On to this week's question!

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Name up to seven comedians -- male or female -- whom you think just generally aren't funny.

  1. Johnny Carson

  2. Milton Berle

  3. Lucille Ball

  4. George Carlin

  5. Sid Ceasar

  6. Sammy Davis, Jr.

  7. Bob Hope

There you go – April Fools'!

To My Wife

If I were a rich man, an especially commissioned bronze such as this lovely piece by sculptor Laury Dizengremel would be winging your way.

Alas, a poor man am I.

It's the thought that counts.

Right?

Right?!?

MEME: Saturday Six - Episode 155

Patrick took a moment from his workout at the gym to say,It's time to play the Six once again, as we near the ...”
Leaving the thought incomplete, he went on, saying,Last week, Call Me Betty of "Alphabet Soup Memes" was first to play. Congratulations, Betty!”

Enjoy!

1. PC or Mac? (You must choose one or the other.)
PC
2. How much do you like one over the other, and what's the main reason?
It's mostly a matter of familiarity these days. Years ago, it was the inflexibility of the closed system of the Apple that turned me off.
3. What would be easier to do without for a week: your cell phone, your television, or your computer?
Of the three, I could do without the cell phone the easiest, followed by television and computer.
4. Take the quiz: Are You a Computer Geek?
I am nerdier than 70% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!
5. What things do you feel more addicted to than your computer?
Nicotine, chocolate, bourbon, german shepherd dogs and my wife (Happy Anniversary, honey!) but not necessarily in that order, heheh. Please note that several of those I no longer consume or otherwise mess with ... but I'm still addicted.
6. If your computer has to go in for service and you're without it for a week, and you have the chance to log on at a different computer, which are you most likely to do first: check news headlines, check email, or update your blog?
I'd check my email first, then put a blurb on my blog explaining my absence.

John Scalzi's Monday Photo Shoot: Working Outside

Posted by Picasa

Your Monday Photo Shoot: Take a picture of people working outside. Because now the weather's right for it (mostly). If you have a photo in your archives of people working outside, that works too.

From the archives, because I don't usually get out early enough to get photos of people working outside, we have three "white hats" confering on the working deck of a construction crane on the Prospect side of the Penobscot River where MDOT is replacing the 87 y.o. suspension bridge over the Prospect -Verona Narrows after testing revealed significant weakening of the primary cables. This was shot just under two years ago in May, 2005. The bridge opened for foot traffic in October for a dedication and is now open for vehicular traffic. Here's a second shot, pulled back so you can see the crane cab in context of the tower it rests on:

Here's a photo of the completed bridge: New Penobscot Narrows Bridge with the old Waldo-Hancock County suspension bridge behind it on WeatherUnderground.com

MEME: Wednesday Mind Hump - Purrfect Pussy Cats

Rfduck took a moment from petting his pussy to say, “Greetings humpers! Today is Respect Your Cat day.”

1. Do you have a cat? How many?
It's more like they have me. There are two resident indoor felines, Lucifer – a 5 y.o. black neutered tom and Lexy – a 13 y.o. spayed female Maine Coon Cat that came to live with us last summer after my brother died. Outdoors there's a pack of lazy semi-feral cats headed by an alpha female named Grace and an alpha male named Pumpkin, Uncle Fred and Aunt Patches, a rheumy-eyed lieutenant named Little Pea, a calico yearling named Thing, a monster junior tom named George, two catlings named “OJ” and whomever else may attach or detach from the group at any given time.
2. How do you show your cat or cats respect?
By allowing them to live in the manner they do – fed daily and otherwise not harassed.
3. If your cat or cats could speak right now, what would they say? I'm sure they'd have all sorts of demands involving food, sleeping accommodations, sibling rivalries and the usual complaints voiced within a family unit. As I used to tell my children, “it's my way or the highway – you don't have to put up with this horrid treatment one second longer than you can bear.”

If you'd like to play along, click the link above and get yourself a clean copy of the questions and leave a link to your answers in the comments there so we can all find them. Ciao! Or is that Meow?!
